The Earth & Space Research Administration (ESRA) serves as a centralized shared resource to support UMBC’s Collaborative Research Centers with NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) with administrative pre- and post-award support.  These centers include the Goddard Planetary Heliophysics Institute (GPHI), The Center for Space Science & Technology (CSST), The Goddard Earth Sciences Technology and Research II (GESTAR II), and The Earth & Space Institute (ESI).  Our staff support these centers, working with UMBC staff, students, research faculty, GSFC Sponsors, appointed fellows and affiliated tenured/tenure-track faculty.

Position Overview:

The sponsored research specialist will be responsible for all financial aspects of their assigned portfolio of grants, contracts, and cooperative agreement tasks from pre-award through closeout.  This position has optional locations at the UMBC Campus in Baltimore, MD and NASA GSFC in Greenbelt, MD.

Telework:

A hybrid telework schedule may be available.

Responsibilities:

Financial management and reporting of research awards associated with each Center, including cooperative agreements, grants, and contracts – monitoring all financial aspects of assigned portfolio from pre-award through closeout.

Specific duties include:

  • Assist faculty members in the submission of proposals, including preparation of the proposal budget
  • Oversee UMBC proposal routing and submission via the specified method
  • Routine reconciliation and analysis of allocated award expenditures, including effort, to ensure accuracy, allowability, and compliance with Federal, State, UMBC, and sponsor requirements
  • Meet with PI faculty members regularly to review funding portfolio, effort, and financial status
  • Prepare required monthly financial reports
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Required Minimum Qualifications:

Requires a Bachelor's degree preferably in Business, Management, Accounting, or Finance. Must be proficient in Gmail, MS Excel and Word.

Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Sponsored research administration experience strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of federal regulations relating to grants and/or contracts
  • Higher education experience desired
  • PeopleSoft and/or Kuali experience
  • Keen attention to detail
  • Exceptional critical thinking, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Robust analytical skills
  • Ability to multi-task and appropriately prioritize duties
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
