IXL delivers community engaged programming with the intention of building bridges between UMBC and our broader community with a diverse portfolio of non-credit programs that include academic programs for youth, post-secondary certificates, customized programming, workforce development and professional development for local, state, and federal agencies, non-traditional students, and lifelong learners.

Position Overview:

The Assistant Director for Pre-college Programs plays a pivotal role in spearheading UMBC’s efforts to provide enriching pre-college academic experiences for students through a variety of educational offerings throughout the year.


The Institute of Extended Learning (IXL) Programs is seeking a skilled, entrepreneurial, innovative, organized and motivated individual with a positive attitude to be a key member of our team overseeing IXL’s pre-college portfolio, including the Summer Enrichment Academy and year-round youth programs. This role will be crucial in managing, executing, and assessing our educational offerings while ensuring high-quality experiences for participants.

Responsibilities:

Program Administration:

  • Manage the pre-college program portfolio, including instructor recruitment, onboarding, and course logistics.
  • Collaborate with Marketing for effective recruitment promotional and social media strategies for all pre-college programs.
  • Travel to events to meet prospective parents and partners to increase program engagement.
  • Serve as a primary liaison for all stakeholders to ensure program success.
  • Liaise with parents, faculty, departments, small businesses and state and local agencies to foster collaborative partnerships and opportunities.


Relationship Building:

  • Build and maintain relationships with subject matter experts to drive innovation and curriculum development.
  • Support the creation of new academic and non-credit pathways for UMBC’s broader community.

Program Assessment:

  • Design and implement comprehensive assessments, including customer satisfaction surveys and instructor evaluations.
  • Track and report on program outcomes and proactively recommend modifications to ensure program success.
  • Analyze assessment data to drive continuous improvement.

Documentation and Policy Development:

  • Document workflows, business processes, and retain course materials to build a library for future development.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to support program growth and scalability.

Safety Protocols and Crisis Management:

  • Create and enforce safety protocols to comply with all relevant laws and regulations.
  • Lead crisis management efforts when necessary.

Operational Duties:

  • Oversee course instructor payroll, manage space and supply costs, and support the registration process for IXL programs.
  • Coordinate logistics for SEA and year-round programs, including setup and transport of equipment (up to 20-30 lbs).
  • Support the enrollment manager and all registration on Campus CE non-credit registration systems.
  • Manage other duties as assigned
  • In-state travel by car is required.
  • This position will require occasional travel and evening hours for program and/or networking events. This position will have a hybrid work arrangement, with a combination of assigned days to work on UMBC’s main campus, and work from home options.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in any field.
  • 3 years minimum of related work supervising programs and people.
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Masters degree or equivalent experience managing youth and or adult educational programs.
  • 5 years of experience in youth programming and professional development programming oversight in a higher education or similar environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in relationship building, recruitment, or business development.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders and convey complex concepts effectively.
    Proven track record of project management, budget oversight, and data analysis, with a results-oriented approach to achieving program objectives.
  • Leadership experience, with the ability to inspire and motivate team members towards shared goals.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and navigate ambiguity in a dynamic work environment.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with a passion for empowering individuals from underrepresented backgrounds.
